9SHORT DESCRIPTION: Black swimsuit with full-length sleeves and leggings. Made of Lycra® spandex, polyester, and nylon. Some seams are stitched with black serging threads, some with white. Pattern in fabric, black on black. The Speedo logo is on the front in white. Swimsuit zips up in back with black zipper. There are three paper tags attached to the end of the left sleeve with small plastic piece: the first is a white Speedo tag; the second is a green Lycra tag; the third is a retail tag with bar code. NOTES: Swimsuit came with two beta tapes, slides, and fabric samples; all of which are stored in the object file. Swimsuit size is extra-extra large. CURATOR'S NOTES: (Thomas Moore, April 2001) Inspired in part by early designs by swimming champion Annette Kellerman,, this one-piece swimsuit was designed by aerospace engineers and marine biologist to increase the speed of competitive swimmers for the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics. The Fastskin was created through digital scans of 400 bodies in eight different positions. A new method of three-dimensional patterning used panels and seams to match muscle and tendon locations. The design compressed the muscles and fit so smoothly ,that it reduced muscle vibration and drag in the water about three percent. The fabric itself mimicked sharkskin, particularly the shark's dermal denticles, v-shaped ridges (not unlike fine-wale corduroy) that help reduce water resistance. The Fastskin contains twenty-two stitches to the inch, with fifty-three inches of thread per inch of stitching. The suit is available in several styles: knee or ankle-length, tank-top or long-sleeved. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: See object fileCL30956

Campbell. As a medical officer aboard the US attack transport Leonard Wood in 1943, Dr. Campbell participated in the invasion by Allied forces of Sicily. Two maps in the collection, marked secret, show the Sicilian coast from the water. The Leonard Wood's area of operations was moved to the Pacific in 1944, and some of the materials reflect that change. Of interest is a very brief bilingual list of phrases meant to assist in taking case histories of wounded Japanese.MS0751
